Whooping Cough
How to Prevent the new Family-Health EPIDEMIC
Rates of pertussis(also known as whooping cough) are expected to hit a 50 year high in parts of the United States this year. It's an extremely contagious disease that spreads in much the same way as the flu, and it can be deadly in kids. The Tdap (tetanus, diptheria & acellular pertussis) vaccine prevents it but can wear off over time. To protect your family, make sure infants receive Tdap shots on time (usually at around 2 months old) and that parents, caregivers, and children 11 to 18 get a booster shots, says Alan Fleischman, M.D., medical director for the March of Dimes.
